Welcome to the World My Darling Bren

After 32 hours of labor, Chris and I finally got to meet our beautiful son by caesarean section. Brennus Edain Markle was born Wednesday, June 23, 2010 at 7:57 am. He weighed 9 lbs. 2 oz. and was 20 ¼ inches long.

We began at home Monday night, when my water broke just before midnight. Eventually, I’ll write the full birth story, as I am still recovering and basking in the glory of my baby son. For now the short of it is we labored for a long time but my cervix did not progress beyond 4 cm, and eventually my healthcare providers were concerned about infection. So, after 24 hours of laboring at home, we transferred to the hospital and I was given pitocin and an epidural. The pitocin started to help my contractions progress; however, Bren didn’t react well to the intensity. At that point, we decided he would have to be delivered surgically.

He came out yelling, as Chris described his birth to me over the blue sheet. I cried and laughed. Then laughed some more. He’s very healthy and we are spending lots of time together as I recover from the surgery. Honestly, I’m totally in love and I couldn’t be happier that I am finally holding my son. He really is the most amazing and perfect baby ever created. Seriously.

I’ll be taking a bit of a hiatus for now, but I’ll be back soon with lots of stories and adventures featuring Bren and the Markle tribe. In the meantime, here are a few extra photos taken by Bridget Norris, from F.I.S.H. Studio.

Father’s Day

We are now nine days past our due date. I’ve been to see my mid-wife twice this week and things are progressing, but I have not gone into labor yet. We’ve had many toning contractions, otherwise known as Braxton Hicks, but nothing strong or progressive. So, we’ve been spending a lot of time either walking, or lying down (to keep my blood pressure down) and watching movies.

Yesterday, my mother took a few photos of Chris and I while we were on one of our walks.

Bellies Beating on my husband, mid-walk Big Hug

Today is father’s day. So, I’d like to honor two very important men in my life, my husband and my father. My father and my step-mother drove 3500 miles from Texas to be here with us this week. He’s been a hoot, he always is, but he helps keep my spirits high. And each time he comes over to hang out with us as we wait for the Sprout, the baby kicks and squirms. I think he recognizes his grandpa’s voice. Since my parents live so far away, it is nice to have them here this week. When he found out I’m planning on having a home birth, he said, “Okay, I’ll wait outside.” So, I like to tease him that I’ll need him to hold my hair during labor. At which point, he goes pale, laughs shakily and says, “No way.”

My husband has been my rock. It’s easy to get discouraged waiting for this little guy to make his entrance. Chris has been great, reminding me that I’m not that far over due and walking with me every day. He also makes me laugh constantly, talking to the baby and singing to him. He helps remind me to take my blood pressure and to not get stressed with all the waiting. I really don’t know what I’d do without him. He’s going to be a wonderful father (some day – hahaha, fingers crossed it’s soon). In all seriousness, that man has been tremendous at putting up with my crazy whims, insecurities and down right battiness. He makes me a better woman.

Kisses on a nature walk

Keep your fingers crossed, perhaps the Sprout will decided today is the day. I’m off to walk a few miles for encouragement.

Forty Weeks

Today is our due date! I don’t have much to say, everything is ready around here. My dad is on his way from Texas. My mother will be here next week. Fingers cross the Sprout decides to come on out and meet his grandparents. And here is my updated belly progress photo.

Grow Baby Grow

Also, if you want to, I’ve put together a spreadsheet for your guesses on his arrival. So, what do you think? Place your best guess now.

On a Cold Day in June

Around these parts, the month of June is as fickle as newly pubescent love.
One day, she will flirt with promises of summer and her deep blue skies.
The next day, she’s gone cold and chilly with gray punishing winds.

As inconstant as Romeo to his Rosaline, we never know from day-to-day,
If June will bring us picnics and sunshine or rain boots and sweaters.
Her capricious moods match our own as we sing or shiver in response.

So we pack our bags with extra gear, wondering if June will be herself today.
And though we’d like to give her our loyalty, to prove we will stand by her,
We are disposed, by instability, to long for the maturity of July’s warmth.

License Plate Says Stunner Number 1 Superstar

Well, to say we are distracted is an understatement. Chris and I are a buzz this week, only five days until we hit our “guess” date. Will he come this week? Will he decide to make his entrance next week? The week after? We just don’t know. But be assured we are singing and talking to him constantly to let him know we are ready when he is ready.

Gleaned Links from The Web

Glean: (verb) to collect or gather anything little by little or slowly. I glean the web, gathering bits of information, links, photos and quotes. Here are some bits that I gleaned in the past couple of weeks about breastfeeding, photography, Facebook and some other fun stuff. Enjoy!

Turn Off, Tune Out, Drop In

I’ve made a decision–I am taking a break from the web. In a few short weeks, I’ll be welcoming our sweet baby boy into the world and taking six weeks off for maternity leave. During that time, I’ve decided that I want to take a sabbatical from the web.

I’ve been using the internet for almost 15 years. The first time I got online, I was 19-years-old and it was dial-up through America Online. At that time, the web was a new environment, mostly chat rooms with a scattering of basic html pages on random topics. I was hooked.

Who Are You? I’m The One Who Is Here

Last weekend, Chris and I participated in an intensive weekend birthing class at Big Belly Services in Seattle. The class was based on Birthing from Within. In short, Birthing from Within focuses on labor as a process of self-discovery physically, emotionally and mentally. Rather than trying to avoid pain, this class focused a lot on pain coping techniques, as well as conversations to dispel false ideas or fears around giving birth. Get the whole story »

Twenty Three

No longer counting the weeks, I’ve started counting the days until our Sprout is due to arrive—twenty three days. That seems like such a small number.

As the weeks dwindle to days, I been thinking about the world we live in and the things I can’t wait to show to our Sprout. I mean, it’s a wild world baby. You know. Sometimes it’s easy to get caught up in the doom. But these days, I feel lucky to have the opportunity to rediscover what makes being alive so much fun. Get the whole story »

From The Reading List

I like to read. I’m a reader. Other kids played sports, I read. I also love to make lists. It’s odd I know. So, I’ve been keeping this list of everything I’ve read for 20 years. What!? Twenty years. Wait, let me count again (1990-2010). Yep, my calculations are correct. That’s just nuts.

I’m sure I’ve missed one here and there and I really won’t put a book on my list that I didn’t complete. Maybe there is a support group for people me. They probably meet at the library. Get the whole story »
