I recently read Lullaby by Chuck Palahniuk (Pala…wha? I have no idea how to pronounce this name.) Mr. P is also the author of Fight Club. I figured since I was so fond of the movie his book Fight Club was based on, that I may like to check out some of his other stuff. Lullaby didn’t let me down.
It was out there, kooky/dark, and I love those kinds of stories. Mr. P tells the story of a journalist who loses his wife and child after reading them a culling poem out of an anthology of poems from the library. He starts an investigation and realizes that people all over the place are losing their children due to this deadly poem.
So, he sets out with a witch/real-estate agent to find all the poems and destroy them before it “accidentally” kills anyone else. Other characters get involved including a coven of witches and their leader who’s bent of destroying man-kind to save the world and a paramedic who’s into necrophilia.
It was a quick read and I really enjoyed it, even if it was on the dark side. The entire novel is written in the first person, which gets confusing when people start switching bodies. But overall, I like the writing style.
Next on the shelf is the latest Oprah pick, The Good Earth. I had trouble with the last book she picked, only because I found it impossibly boring and I couldn’t get into it. I hope this one is better. I’m happy with the pick too, because it was already on my list of need to reads.
After The Good Earth, I’ve slated to read Club Dumas, a recommendation from one of my co-workers.
Happy reading.
